Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) measures changes in oxygenated and deoxygenated haemoglobin in the cortex with near-infrared light sent through the scalp. Being portable and tolerant of movement makes it suited to infant studies, recording in natural settings and tasks in motion.
High-density diffuse optical tomography (HD-DOT) reconstructs an image tomographically from many overlapping measurements, raising the spatial resolution. Systems that combine fNIRS with EEG in one cap record the electrical and the haemodynamic response together.
