EEG and eye-tracking integration

Record brain activity and visual attention at the same time, in the same context. EEG tells you what happens in the brain, eye tracking what the person is looking at; integrating the g.Nautilus wearable EEG with Tobii Pro Glasses 3 gives a comprehensive cognitive analysis in the real world without restricting the participant's natural movement.

Highlights

  • The brain's response is tied directly to the point being looked at: cognitive load, attention, emotional response and ERP analysis
  • Binocular gaze tracking at 50 or 100 Hz and scene video, simultaneous with the EEG
  • EEG and gaze data synchronised to the millisecond
  • A light, wireless set-up for real-life scenarios such as walking, shopping and navigation
  • Real-time recording in the Simulink-based g.HIsys Professional; g.BSanalyze for offline analysis
  • Eye tracking finds the target, EEG confirms the intent: double confirmation for BCI applications

Where the eyes go, and how the brain answers

The glasses record what the participant looks at, the EEG how the brain responds to it. On one time axis, every look becomes a time mark in the brain signal. Switch the view, and tap the points in the drawing to see what each part does.

Every fixation becomes a time mark in the EEG: the brain's response is measured while the person looks around naturally.

Each dot is one gaze sample: 100 Hz, one every 10 ms. EEG is recorded five times as often, 500 samples a second; both sit on one time axis.

How it works

Four steps in g.HIsys

The Tobii Pro Glasses 3 interface in g.HIsys

A Simulink model is built from the Tobii Pro Glasses 3 demo template; the Tobii Pro Glasses 3 Interface block starts and stops the glasses' acquisition. The recording unit connects over Wi-Fi, and calibration is done from Simulink or the Tobii app with a card held 0.5–1 m away. EEG and gaze data are synchronised to the millisecond; events marked in Tobii Pro Lab are exported and analysed offline together with the EEG in g.BSanalyze.

Why both

What neither system gives on its own

While EEG measures cognitive load or focus, eye tracking shows exactly what the person is looking at; which visual stimulus has which effect on the brain is seen directly. After the experiment the data can be analysed in layers, across time windows, frequency bands and event-based segments.

  • Contextual cognitive monitoring
  • Ecological validity
  • Layered analysis
