Aviation and Flight Simulation Research

Pilot attention · Mental workload · Neuroergonomics

Study pilot attention, mental workload, stress and fatigue in flight simulators using EEG, eye tracking, fNIRS and biosignals.

Aviation neuroergonomics

Examine task performance alongside physiological data.

Compare pilot responses during take-off, approach, landing, automation handovers and unexpected events. Relate reaction time, control errors and task performance to EEG band power, visual attention and autonomic responses. Situational awareness is not inferred from one sensor signal alone; study it alongside task measures and suitable assessment tools.

Multimodal recording

Align brain activity, gaze and autonomic responses.

Consider g.Nautilus Research for EEG, g.Nautilus with Tobii Pro Glasses 3 for visual attention and g.Nautilus Multi-purpose for EEG with additional physiological signals. Consider g.Nautilus fNIRS for EEG–fNIRS and LUMO for denser optical measurement plans. PLUX sensors can complement these with ECG/HRV, EDA, respiration and EMG; coverage depends on the selected kit and sensors.

Experiment and analysis plan

From simulator events to comparable results.

Align task events and simulator logs on a shared timeline, and check signal quality and movement artifacts. Compare EEG spectral features, ERP in suitable stimulus tasks, gaze areas of interest (AOI), HRV and EDA responses across task periods. Account for participant differences and learning effects, and complement analysis with subjective workload scales and behavioural measures.

Setup selection

Plan sensor and software compatibility together.

The PLUX Cognitive Performance kit includes ECG, EDA, respiration and fNIRS, but no EEG. Smart Sensors require BiosignalsPRO and Biosignals Studio. Plan event markers, clock alignment and software integration across separate systems. Moving from simulator research to real flight requires a separate assessment of mounting, cockpit compatibility and operational permissions.
